What is Grading & Why is it Important?

Make Sure Your Project Has a Solid Foundation

Site grading is used in construction projects to adjust the slope of an area prior to building. Before anything can be built, the ground must be level before a structure can be erected. Creating an even surface through grading provides a stronger, more even foundation.

For both commercial and residential construction, professional engineers need to evaluate the site to determine if the site requires grading to create a level base for the project. There are several factors that are considered to assess the scope of the project, including soil composition, moisture levels, and geological makeup. If it is determined that grading is needed, an excavation services team will need to be hired to grade the site (Fitzgerald can do that!). These professionals will come in and use heavy machinery to prepare the surface for leveling, then use a grader to create an even finish.

Why is Site Grading Important?

In addition to leveling out the ground to provide a sturdy foundation for construction sites, grading is also used to direct the flow of runoff water. When sites aren’t engineered properly, it can cause problems to the building and the surrounding property. Issues like erosion, foundation damage, and basement flooding occur when properties aren’t graded to facilitate proper drainage.

In order to grade a piece of the property properly and ensure that water flows away from buildings, a grade of a slope of at least 5% must be created on the lot. This 5% grade can be translated into a 6-inch drop in height over a 10-foot distance away from the building. While this is the general rule of thumb many general contractors follow to ensure effective runoff, excavation experts can sometimes grade surfaces using less of a slope.
